School Food Standards
Primary school menus are designed by dietitians and nutritionists within Jersey’s Public Health Department and delivered in line with School Food Standards for younger children.
The menus are also supported by Public Health to ensure they are completely balanced nutritionally, with appropriate portion sizes and a balanced range of food groups across the week.
Regular review ensures they are age appropriate and aligned with wider wellbeing guidance, focusing on familiar, nutritious food that children enjoy eating while limiting foods high in sugar, salt and saturated fat.
Secondary school menus are planned and delivered in line with the UK School Food Standards, which set clear requirements for the types of food that can be served and how often.
The standards ensure a balance of food groups across the week, with limits on foods high in sugar, salt and saturated fat. Menus are structured to support students’ energy, concentration and wellbeing throughout the school day.
In secondary settings, menus are designed to meet these standards while recognising the pace and scale of secondary school catering. A range of hot meals, lighter options and vegetarian choices are offered across a three week cycle, allowing for choice while maintaining consistency and compliance.
This approach ensures secondary school food provision meets recognised nutritional standards while remaining practical and appropriate for busy school environments.
