Why Free School Meals matter
Primary Schools
Free School Meals play an important role in supporting children to learn, concentrate and take part fully in the school day. A reliable, nutritious lunch helps children maintain energy levels, supports focus in the classroom and removes one less pressure from families who may already be juggling rising living costs.
Access to Free School Meals also supports equality within schools. It ensures that every child has the same opportunity to enjoy a warm meal alongside their peers, helping to remove barriers and reduce stigma.
At Flourish Schools, Free School Meals are delivered with the same care, quality and consistency as all of our school meals, providing children with food that is balanced, filling and appropriate for the school day.
Who is eligible for Free School Meals?
In Jersey, children may be entitled to Free School Meals if they fall into one of the following categories:
- Looked after children
- Children from households who have recently claimed, or are currently receiving, Income Support
- Children from households with ‘Registered’ status who would qualify for Income Support if they had lived in Jersey for five years
- Children whose parent or guardian is serving in the Jersey Field Squadron
If you think your child may be eligible, or you would like to check, please get in touch with our team or apply online.
How the Free School Meals process works
The Free School Meals process is simple, confidential and discreet.
If your child is eligible, all we need is a photo or copy of your confirmation letter from Social Security showing that you are in receipt of Income Support. This can be emailed directly to the Flourish Schools team.
Once received, we add your child to the system as eligible for Free School Meals.
From that point onwards, meals are ordered in exactly the same way as paid meals. You select meals through the usual ordering system, but the payment step is automatically bypassed. There is no difference in the food provided, how meals are served, or how children experience lunchtime at school.
There is no way for staff or other pupils to tell whether a meal is paid for or provided through Free School Meals. All children are treated the same, and confidentiality is fully respected at all times.
If you have any questions or need support with the process, our team is always happy to help.
