Paying for meals and top up cards

Secondary school meals are primarily paid for using the Checkout pre paid top up card system. Each student is issued with a personal top up card when they start secondary school, which must be presented at the point of purchase.

Cash payments are accepted, however the use of top up cards is encouraged as this helps reduce queuing and supports a quicker, smoother service during busy lunch periods. The card system allows students to move through service efficiently and helps manage high volumes within limited lunch times.

If a student attempts to pay for a meal and does not have enough credit on their top up card, they must speak to the school office. Each school will manage this situation in line with its own internal policies. Flourish Schools is unable to offer meals on an IOU basis, as delayed or retrospective payment can cause confusion for parents when cards are later debited, may appear as duplicated charges, creates additional administration and slows down service at the till.

Ordering a top up card

Top up cards are issued when a student begins secondary school. If a card is lost or damaged, parents and carers can order a replacement card directly through Checkout. Replacement cards are sent by Jersey Post. Further information about ordering a replacement card can be found at

Topping up credit

Credit can be added to a student’s card in advance using the Checkout system. This allows families to manage spending and ensures students can access food easily during the school day.

Lost or forgotten cards

If a student forgets their card, the school’s own procedures will apply. Schools can advise students on the appropriate next steps in line with their internal policies.

Free school meals

Students entitled to free school meals are supported in line with Government of Jersey and school arrangements. Schools can provide guidance on how this is managed within the Checkout system.
